They’re calling him Benjamin Button, for his wizened appearance but tender years.

A cold and emaciated puppy believed to be just a couple months old was found Friday night in a large trash bin in an alley between Seventh and Eighth streets behind Durango Natural Foods near College Drive, said Chris Nelson, shelter director for the La Plata County Humane Society.

Now, Nelson said, city Animal Protection officials are seeking information about how the pup ended up in the trash and have hung posters around the area.

“It certainly couldn’t have gotten there on its own, (it’s a) very tiny puppy,” he said.

It’s believed the pup was dumped between 4 p.m. and midnight Friday. Nelson said a reward is being offered for good leads in the case. Call dispatch at 385-2900 or the shelter at 259-2847.

Nelson said the puppy, apparently a dachshund mix, was listless at first but is much improved. He said the dog, once recovered, will be available for adoption.
