Freestyle Devo skiers bump into Telluride

The Durango Freestyle Devo Ski Team continued to post top results at the second event of the season, the USSA Southwest Freestyle last weekend in Telluride.

The event pitted developmental freestyle skiers (ages 6 to 14) from Purgatory and Telluride. The two-day slopestyle and mogul competition brought out 60 competitors from the two clubs.

The slopestyle event started the festivities. Shane Ellis (J4, ages 11-12) topped all competitors with the highest score in the competition, narrowly defeating teammate George McQuinn.

Trudy Mickel won the J5 division (ages 10 and younger) with brother Charlie taking second for the J6s (ages 8 and under).

Sadie Smith was fourth for J4 girls, while Jimmy Pope took fifth place and Coleman Bader earned seventh for the boys.

Max Wilson jumped up to a fourth-place finish for J5 boys.

On Sunday, McQuinn got redemption as he posted the highest score in the field for moguls, narrowly beating Ellis.

“It is great to see these two compete at such a high level and push each other,” said Matt Fullam, coach of the Durango Freestyle Devos.

“All of our kids continue to get better each and every outing.”

Mickel picked up her second gold medal of the weekend narrowly defeating teammate Amina Youssef.

Rachel Ensign (J3) earned a silver medal in her first competition while brother Alec posted top honors for J2 boys in his first endeavor.

Smith took the bronze medal, and Mickel took another silver medal.

Wilson had his best showing, bringing home a bronze medal. Bader took sixth.

Other Durango skiers included Callie Jung, Sophie Turner, Dana Stahl, Ellie Duke and Emma Duke.

The Durango Freestyle Devo Team will host the Spine Colorado/Durango Orthopedics Freestyle Challenge under the lights at Chapman Hill and at Purgatory on Feb. 18-20.
