Racers from the Purgatory Alpine Ski Team competed all over the state last week with top results from every venue.
Ability class ski racers Jobe Sarvash, Stephanie Bowles, Sonja Fleming, Scott Schwab and Curtis Eggleston competed in United States Collegiate Ski Association giant slalom races on Milk Run at Telluride.
They raced against skiers from the University of Colorado, University of Denver, Colorado School of Mines, Air Force Academy, CSU, Wyoming, Fort Lewis and Colorado Mountain College.
In a field of 90 men, Eggleston placed 15th and 16th in the two races.
Sarvash managed the steep course to finish 46th and 49th.
Schwab wiped out in both afternoon runs but skied well in the mornings. He was 17th and 29th in the morning runs.
Bowles took 33rd and 37th against a field of 70 women.
Fleming finished 30th in Saturday’s race.
J4 racers (ages 10-11) competed at a super-G event, braving a soft, rutted course on the long, steep Cimarron run at Breckenridge.
The Purgatory girls stunned the teams from the Front Range with three skiers in the top 10 in Sunday’s morning race.
Katy F. Milliet led the girls with two bronze medals. She missed gold by less than a second in the afternoon race.
First-year J4 Anne Chase ran one of her best races ever, taking sixth against the state’s top racers.
Chase wiped out in her second run but was able to finish and take 29th.
Bryce Ward placed 10th in the morning and 15th in the afternoon.
In a 55-racer field, Clay Eggleston put together two solid races, placing 17th and 22nd. He was followed closely by first-year J4 Lucas Robbins (21st, 26th) in his first super-G competition.
Gunnar Schwab and Jackolas Eggleston competed at the J5 Slalom Festival at Sunlight against a field of 75 boys from all teams in Colorado.
Schwab’s aggressive skiing did not pay off, with one DQ and a 54th-place finish after hiking.
Jackolas Eggleston put together two quality runs, finishing third and fifth.
“We had a great weekend of racing, with spectacular results,” head coach Leah LeSage said.
“The older kids handled themselves well against college racers, especially on such an intimidating run,” LeSage said.
“The J4 girls absolutely nailed it. The Front Range teams aren’t used to the southern kids collecting the hardware at their events. These results bode well for Katie, Bryce and Anne at the upcoming Junior Olympic qualifiers,” she said.
She also praised the finishes of Jack Eggleston.
“I cannot say enough about Jack’s finishes, especially with no slalom gate training this year. He was definitely noticed by the northern coaches,” LeSage said.
The Purgatory Alpine Ski Team will host USSA Southern Series slalom races Saturday and Sunday on Upper Hades.
