The first formal slopestyle competition ever at Chapman Hill kicked off a weekend of freestyle skiing in Durango.
Even Olympic medalist Toby Dawson, now a student at Fort Lewis College, was on hand to help judge the freestyle competitors in the opening event of the Durango Orthopedics/Spine Colorado Freestyle Challenge at Durango’s downtown ski area.
Six events were held in all, with Saturday’s and Sunday’s action moving to Purgatory at Durango Mountain Resort.
“This was great to see all of the kids have to be creative and put together all of the different elements in freestyle skiing,” said Dawson, a bronze mogul medalist from the Turin Games.
“What a great venue for these kids to have in the heart of Durango.”
For the slopestyle at Chapman Hill, the criteria included extreme skiing, moguls, slopestyle and even style points for rope-tow riding.
A competitor’s run would start when they first grabbed the rope tow.
The competitors ascended to the steep extreme section at the top of Chapman Hill. A brief mogul section followed with slopestyle jumps and rail sections at the bottom.
The event was part of the USSA Rocky Mountain Devo series and teams were represented from Purgatory, Telluride, Aspen and Winter Park.
Once the competition started, the McQuinns of Durango Freestyle took over.
George and Carter McQuinn might have inherited a new nickname: the McWins. The McQuinn brothers won five of the six events during the weekend.
Other Durango athletes joining the McQuinns as age class winners on Friday night were Trudy and Charlie Mickel, Parker Norvell and Jamie Wanzek.
Second-place honors went to Shane Ellis and Amina Youssef with third-place finishes posted by Sadie Smith, Tatum Duke and Silverton’s William Morris.
Coleman Bader managed a fourth-place finish with Jimmy Pope and Max Wilson finishing in fifth.
Andrew Papineau placed sixth.
Purgatory hosted the moguls and dual mogul competitions Saturday and Sunday.
George McQuinn posted the highest marks in moguls, narrowly defeating teammate Ellis.
Trudy Mickel added to her collection of hardware with a win in moguls.
Carter McQuinn, Alec Ensign and Rachel Ensign all won their age classes.
Youssef took home silver as did Wilson and Charlie Mickel.
Pope earned his highest marks of the season to earn a bronze medal along with teammate Smith.
In his competitive mogul skiing debut, Papineau skied to a fourth-place finish. Bader and Emma Duke also were fourth in their divisions.
Other Durango competitors and placements included Callie Jung sixth, Keiran Eagan seventh, Dana Stahl eighth, Sophie Turner ninth and Elle Duke 11th.
Duals showcased two skiers side by side down the Upper Bull run on Sunday.
George McQuinn earned the hat trick with his first-place finish. He was followed by Ellis, Bader, Pope, Ensign, Carter McQuinn, Wilson and Mickel for the boys top eight.
Eagan and Papineau tied for ninth place.
Smith managed a fourth place for the girls, followed by Mickel and Ensign in fifth and sixth, respectively, and Jung in eighth.
Youssef, Turner and Elle Duke all tied for ninth.
Dawson was on hand again to judge and sign autographs.
As part of the awards program, the freestylers had a chance to touch or even wear Dawson’s bronze medal from the Turin Winter Olympics.
