The Purgatory Snowboard Team made its competitive debut last weekend at the USASA “Go Big or Go Home” competition in Telluride.
And the local riders brought home medals from their first event.
Team riders competed in a pair of snowboard giant slalom and slalom races Saturday on Telluride’s Butterfly run. On Sunday, the participated in a slopestyle competiion.
Purgatory Snowboard Team riders were Rocco Estes, Sam Aber, Boyd Matheson, Dan Lorenz and Oslo Mills.
Estes (age 7) took first place in the giant Slalom and second in the slalom.
Matheson (13) was third in giant slalom.
Lorenz (12) competed in both events, taking second place in the slalom.
The slopestyle was held in Telluride’s Hoot Brown Terrain Park.
Mills (10) finished in third place with a clean run.
Estes took first place in his age group, while Lorenz took second, just missing first place.
The Purgatory Snowboard Team has 12 members in its inaugural season, ages 7-13.
TheY will be in action at home this weekend for a halfpipe competition at Durango Mountain Resort on Saturday and a slope- style contest at DMR on March 12.
The competitions at Purgatory are open to the public – skiers and snowboarders.
Registration will be at 8 a.m. at Hoody’s on the day of each event.
Entry fee is $20 per event.
