The League of Women Voters of La Plata County is an active group of women and men engaged in the political process from the local to the national levels. At every step, LWV volunteers dedicate themselves to informing citizens about important policy and electoral decisions, and encouraging participation in those decisions — for the betterment of the community. The local league’s commitment to this important effort was recognized last month when it received the League of the Year award from the Colorado League of Women Voters at the state convention.
The honor is a fitting affirmation of the activism the La Plata County League consistently demonstrates at the electoral, legislative and administrative levels. Led by President Stephanie Huss, LWV had a robust calendar during the 2009-2011 award period, during which the group held 17 forums to educate voters on candidates and ballot issues, organized meetings to discuss health care and environmental concerns, and submitted comments to the Environmental Protection Agency on proposed cleanup plans for the Four Corners Power Plant and San Juan Generating Station, both situated near Farmington.
This range of activities is representative of the key role the organization plays in influencing civic engagement in La Plata County. That is not only instrumental in producing informed voters – who show up at the polls – but it contributes in no small part to the way the community responds to issues of concern. The resources that LWV has provided the region since its founding in 1945 are invaluable contributions to the quality of life we all appreciate. By taking on a robust agenda of issues important to this community, including: health care, youth and families, water, energy and sustainability, LWV is a staunch guardian of that quality of life.
Congratulations to the League of Women Voters of La Plata County on being rightly honored for its effective contributions.
