Young students at the Piedra Learning Community in Bayfield are keeping their eyes glued to Facebook this week as climbers venture up Mount Rainier to benefit their school.
The alternative school blends therapy with education and serves kindergarteners through third-graders. The school needs a new building, said director Susan Livingston, so board president Todd Rutledge organized a fundraiser climb to help. Rutledge owns Mountain Trip, an Ophir-based mountain guiding service.
The group of climbers started up the mountain Tuesday and aim to summit the mountain in five days. Their goal is to raise $5,000 for the school.
