Fire management officers, forestry technicians and others learned the basics of coordinating aerial fire retardant drops with pilots like Randy Bolen, who demonstrates a drop in his single-engine air tanker, or SEAT south of Durango-La Plata County Airport. Bolen is one of three tanker units contracted by the Colorado State Forest Service for the fire season. While rains may trick some into thinking there is no fire danger, officials said lightning strikes and other causes start fires almost daily in Southwest Colorado. Representatives from more than half a dozen agencies began with a training session at an air tanker base at the airport, later driving south for a demonstration.
