Runnin’ on steam

Winn Erdman of Placitas, N.M., celebrates his 73rd birthday by displaying his steam-driven model trains at the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad & Museum during the 13th annual Durango Railfest. Erdman said his engines use camp-stove fuel to fire a burner that heats the engine’s boiler, producing steam. He said there are some model trains that use coal to heat the boiler instead of gas, but they cost about $6,500. The model steam trains and their larger brethren will be on display today at the station. Enlargephoto
