According to the Colorado Division of Water Resources, the historical average annual flow in the Animas and Florida rivers is 660,000 acre-feet.
Probably the largest amount is pulled out by ranchers and farmers. In 2010, the seven largest ditches diverted 89,139 acre-feet.
Partners in the Animas-La Plata Project can take up to 57,100 acre-feet of water a year.
The city of Durango treats water from the Animas for drinking only when the Florida River, its main source of water for consumption, runs low. In 2010, the city treated 613 acre-feet of water – only 16.66 percent of all treated water.
Another demand on the Animas is the flow below the A-LP pumping station. The Bureau of Reclamation must allow a minimum flow of 225 cubic feet per second April-September, 160 cfs October-November and 125 cfs December-March.
