Joan Babbitt McGee

Former Durango resident Joan Babbitt McGee died from an infection after ankle surgery Monday, Sept. 26, 2011, in Fresno, Calif. She was 63.

Mrs. McGee was born to Benjamin and Frances Babbitt on May 11, 1948. She grew up in Durango and graduated from Durango High School in 1966. Mrs. McGee briefly attended the University of Northern Colorado in Greeley.

In 1984, she married her longtime companion, Thomas McGee, in Detroit. The couple spent their married life there, where Mr. McGee worked for Ford Motor Co. and Mrs. McGee was an in-home caregiver for seniors.

Since relocating to Fresno after her husband’s death in 2008, she had enjoyed playing cards with friends and working jigsaw puzzles.

Mrs. McGee was preceded in death by her husband of 24 years, Thomas McGee.

She is survived by her sister, Jacque Babbitt, of Fresno; brothers David Babbitt of Prescott, Ariz., and Peter Babbitt of Elizabethton, Tenn.; and several nieces and nephews.

Cremation has occurred. A memorial service will be held Saturday, Oct. 15, 2011, in Fresno.
