Choral’s Christmas to include premiere

A holiday favorite is back this weekend as nearly 150 singers from the three Durango Choral Society choirs and members of the Fort Lewis College Percussion Ensemble will bring “A Traditional Family Christmas” to the Community Concert Hall at FLC.

Expect the highlight of the concert to be the world premiere of a work commissioned by the Choral Society in memory of Morley Ballantine, the late Durango Herald publisher; it’s a new arrangement of “The Little Drummer Boy” created by DCS associate conductor and local musician C. Scott Hagler.

The three choirs – The Durango Choral Society, Durango Children’s Chorale and Durango Women’s Choir – will all be on stage, with special guests the Durango Jazz Combo and Fort Lewis College Percussion Ensemble.

“This is a really family-friendly, fun and spirit-filled performance,” said Linda Mack Berven, conductor of the Durango Choral Society and Durango Women’s Choir. “We’re performing a wide variety of music, plus we’ll have audience sing-alongs and surprises for the kids.”

The public also is invited to the Holiday Gala Fundraiser, a silent-auction benefit for the Durango Children’s Chorale, before and after the concert, in neighboring Jones Hall. Auction goers will enjoy free refreshments and live music by Margi Coxwell. Items in the auction will include a bottle of 1998 Mouton-Rothschild (valued at $800), Native American flutes, a Stetson hat and lots of locally made pottery and framed art.

“The gala is an important part of our fundraising efforts,” said Amy Barrett, conductor of the Durango Children’s Chorale. “It’s a large part of why we can offer as many scholarships to our students as we do. We’re very grateful for the support of our community.”
