Accident slows traffic on U.S. 160

A Durango man escaped uninjured from a rollover accident Wednesday west of city limits on U.S. Highway 160.

The accident occurred at 12:05 p.m. near the base of Hesperus Hill, said Trooper Jason Shimp with the Colorado State Patrol.

The driver was identified as Jerry Harms, who is the safety officer and risk manager for the city of Durango.

Harms was driving a 2009 Ford F-250 westbound when he attempted to pass, hit some slush, lost control, crossed into oncoming traffic, struck a guardrail, spun around and tipped the truck onto its passenger side, Shimp said.

Harms was cited for careless driving.

The posted speed limit is 65 mph, Shimp said.

Harms is not suspected of speeding but was probably driving too fast for conditions, the trooper said.

The eastbound lane was closed about 45 minutes while crews cleared the wreckage. Both lanes of traffic were able to pass the crash scene in alternating fashion.
