Bayfield library to show film Saturday

The Lavenia McCoy Public Library in Bayfield will show “Rise of the Planet of the Apes” at 6:30 p.m. Saturday in the library meeting room at 395 Bayfield Center Drive.

The movie starring James Franco, Andy Serkis and Freida Pinto is the story of a genetically enhanced chimpanzee that uses its greater intelligence to lead other apes to freedom.

Exercise class to collect items for food bank

Terri Oliger will present “Get Fit & Feed Durango” from noon to 1 p.m. Saturday at the Durango Community Recreation Center, 2700 Main Ave.

A personal trainer and fitness instructor, Oliger will host a high-intensity interval workout in the gym to benefit the Durango Food Bank. She will combine a variety of cardiovascular and muscular exercises as well as core work. Oliger will provide modifications for the exercises so participants of all levels are able to participate.

A donation of one non-perishable food item is required for admission. After the class, all non-perishable food items will be donated to the Durango Food Bank.

Library to hold cooking class for kids

The Lavenia McCoy Public Library in Bayfield will host the class “Cooking for Kids: Holiday Edition” at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday in the library meeting room at 395 Bayfield Center Drive.

Children ages 8 and older will learn about cooking basics, measuring, cooking techniques and creative decorating. Advanced sign-up is required.

Discovery Museum announces events

The Durango Discovery Museum, 1333 Camino del Rio, will host these events:

“Family Genetics” will take place from 10 a.m. to noon Tuesday and from 1 to 4 p.m. Dec. 27. Participants will extract DNA and learn about its structure by making models using common household materials. Participants also will investigate family traits and more.

“Snow Science” will take place from 1 to 4 p.m. Tuesday and from 10 a.m. to noon Dec. 27. Participants will explore the science of snow and ice. Participants will make fake snow, study crystalline molecules, make ice cream and more.

“Family Craft and Story Time” will take place from 10 a.m. to noon Wednesday and Dec. 28.

The cost for each class is $5.

Blanket, food drive to take place Saturday

Project Merry Christmas will hold a blanket drive from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at La Plata Electric Association, 45 Stewart St.

Donations of food, money, new clothes, new toys and new blankets will be accepted.
