I just finished reading the article on plastic bags (Herald, Dec. 7) and must admit that I get fed up with other people telling me what I need to do or stop doing. What ever happened to the liberty that our founding fathers guaranteed us in the Constitution?
I agree with Erich Bussian that we all have an obligation to take care of the planet that God blessed us with. Quite frankly, I do not personally know of anyone who wants to destroy or hurt the environment. We may disagree with the supposed causes of environmental deterioration but few want to purposely harm it. However, that being said, people and businesses need to have the freedom to make that choice based on the merits of the argument, not based a new law or regulation. Government needs to stay out of our personal lives and stop infringing upon the freedoms we have.
Let a position or argument stand or fall on its own merits. Why not permit a business owner to make an individual decision based upon his or her beliefs and give the individual the same choice? If I do not like what a business decides, I will take my business elsewhere – be it Cortez or Farmington. I am guaranteed that freedom of choice, as is a local business owner.
Please stop dictating via new laws and regulations what is good for me and my family based upon your opinions and interpretations.
The bottom line for me is that I like plastic bags and use and reuse them for various purposes. The city of Durango should not limit my choice with a new law.
