Matt Simonsen, a.k.a. Matt the Magician, will give a swan song performance “Magic Doesn’t Solve Everything” at 7 p.m. Friday at the Durango Arts Center. The 17-year-old illusionist, who has been performing locally and regionally since he was 6, graduated from Durango High School a semester early and will enroll at Colorado State University in January. Friday’s show also will feature other young local talent including Mountain Middle School twin siblings Abby and Paxton Scott, acrobat Levi Harris and the band Frequency in addition to Simonsen’s regular assistant Brenna Christensen. The show is both a farewell and a fundraiser to offset some of Simonsen’s college expenses. “Magic’s what I do and it’s definitely how I’m going to get through college,” Simonsen said. Tickets for “Magic Doesn’t Solve Everything” cost $12 for adults, $9 for children and seniors at the door. The Durango Arts Center is otherwise closed for the holidays and will reopen Jan. 2.
