It’s a smart move to ban plastic bags. Forward thinking means better sales. What happened when Natural Grocers-Vitamin Cottage moved to town? No loss of patrons for them, with just a sign on the door to “bring your own bags.” They are doing fine.
Or do you think a ban is ridiculous and will harm our tourist revenue? Then impose a small fee on each plastic bag to pay for the disposal of these in the landfill. When a grocery store gives away as many as 30,000 bags a week, and they end up stuffed in the closet, ultimately off to the landfill they go, even after they’ve been used for dog poop and can liners. Why should we, the taxpayers, pay more for landfill fees, when we could just bring our own bags again and again and save our own money in the long run?
Let’s get with it: waste costs. Plastic bags cost and become waste. It’s not the loss of tourist revenue we should worry about but the cost of waste.
