The Darkest Hour. (No Ebert rating) Five young adults are trapped in Moscow as aliens attack. Such forgettable films often go straight to video, but now it may take a couple of weeks. Rated PG-13.

The Adventures of Tintin. HHH½ (In digital 3-D with surcharge) Thanks to well-used 3-D animation, Spielberg isn’t limited by real film in telling the fantastical exploits of the globe-trotting boy. Rated PG.

The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo.HHH½ Rooney Mara’s portrayal of Stieg Larsson’s globally infamous Lisbeth Salander is all the talk these days. Rated R.

Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol.HHH½ The story lives up to the action in the fourth adventure for Tom Cruise’s super-spy alter ego, Ethan Hunt. Rated PG-13.

Alvin & The Chipmunks: Chipwrecked. (No Ebert rating) A luxury cruise takes a turn for the worse when the famed trio and their pals are marooned on a deserted island. Something between “Lost” and “Gilligan’s Island,” but with chipmunks. Rated G.

Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows.HHH½ The story is true to the classic tales if the action-blockbuster part isn’t; Robert Downey Jr.’s Holmes matches wits with his archnemesis Professor Moriarty. Watson helps. Rated PG-13.

We Bought A Zoo.HH½ Rarely is there such truth in cinematic advertising. In this film, a family buys a zoo. Rated PG-13.

New Year’s Eve.H There haven’t been this many stars on one screen since “It’s a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World.” Looks to be just as baffling. Rated PG-13.

My Week with Marilyn.HHH½ Based on a true story, a young man working on a movie set in England is tapped to spend a secluded week alone with the ultimate bombshell. Rated R
