In response to Patricia Senecal’s letter (Herald, Dec. 27), I would like to offer my full support for her campaign to ban the use of plastic bags. However, I would like to point out that some of the key facts she did not mention. Along with banning plastic bags, I believe that the city should take a step further and ban the use of all activities that are deemed “wasteful” and would contribute to higher landfill fees.

For instance, this year my family and I took part in a “green” Christmas by not wrapping any of our presents in wrapping paper primarily because of the cost of waste it purposes. Sure, it took away from some of the grandeur of the occasion, but nonetheless if every citizen was required not to use wrapping paper, think how much space could be saved in the landfill. Along with this, we also took all of the packaging off the presents and gave the packaging back to the manufacturer with instructions for them to properly recycle the items to minimize waste and landfill costs.

If only the rest of society and not only Senecal realized the benefits behind doing such acts, we would never have to pay higher landfill fees and the “cost of waste” would be much less. Why worry about tourist revenue when we can be helping ourselves and lower landfill fees? This should become part of a daily regimen.
