DHS wrestling: A hard day’s night

Demons fare well Day 1 at Payson Invitational

The Durango High School wrestling team traveled to Arizona on Friday to test the competition at the annual Payson Invitational.

The two-day, 26-team tournament will continue today with championship matches scheduled for tonight.

“Justin Ngo and Christian Stadler have been wrestling outstanding (Friday),” Durango head coach Doug Cuddie said.

Ngo (120) and Stadler (145) are two of six DHS wrestlers who advanced unbeaten through the first four rounds of the tournament.

Freshman Matthew Lavengood is undefeated for DHS at 106 pounds. He went 4-0 on Friday.

Nick Tarpley also went 4-0 at 132 pounds.

Gabe Crawford of the Demons was 3-0 at 152 pounds, with another match scheduled late Friday night.

Durango heavyweight Trevor Gillen extended his unbeaten record on the season. He won four matches Friday to improve to 20-0.

“We’ve got a long way to go, but we’re looking good,” Cuddie said.

The Demons are in third place out of the 26 prep teams heading into the final late round of wrestling Friday night.

“It’s been a long day, and we have been wrestling hard all day long,” Cuddie said.
