BHS girls beat the odds, then Alamosa

Wolverines win their third game in five days

The Wolverines beat the odds, beat fatigue and beat Alamosa.

The Bayfield High School girls basketball team won for the third time in five days, beating the Mean Moose 47-33 in Alamosa on Saturday afternoon.

The Wolverines broke open a low-scoring, close game with a fourth-quarter flurry on offense and defense, outscoring the Moose 19-8.

Bayfield led 17-12 at the end of the low-scoring first half.

Alamosa cut the Bayfield lead to three at 28-25 with a three-point play by Blake Fawcett at the end of the third quarter.

But senior Keenan Moreta opened the fourth quarter with a basket for the Wolverines.

Haley Goddard followed with an inside basket and a subsequent free throw to put the Wolverines up 33-26 with 6:40 to play in the game. Goddard converted two more free throws on Bayfield’s next possession to extend the run.

Back-to-back baskets by Breetta Moe, assisted by Candace Shaw, pushed the game out of reach.

Moe, with eight points in the fourth quarter, led the balanced Bayfield attack with 14 points. Shaw scored 11 points. Kayla Strobel scored nine. Goddard added seven.

Nicole Broyles led Alamosa (5-9, 1-2 IML) with nine points. Taylor Hackett scored seven.

Bayfield (9-1, 3-0 IML) will host Navajo Prep at 7 p.m. Wednesday in a nonconference game.
