Arrest warrant issued for man tied to domestic-violence case

Accused of dragging girlfriend behind truck near Durango hotel

Keywords: Assault (general),

The Durango Police Department is looking for an Arizona man suspected of dragging his girlfriend a short distance after her fingers became stuck in the door of his truck.

An arrest warrant has been issued for Stanley Begay Jr., who may have returned to Kayente, Ariz., or is in Cortez, said Ray Shupe, spokesman with the police department.

The incident occurred at 3:13 p.m. Friday in an alley behind Budget Inn, 3077 Main Ave.

Witnesses reported a disturbance between a man and a woman. The woman was bleeding from the mouth and possibly had a broken finger.

The man left the scene in an older red-and-white truck, according to an incident report filed with the police department.

The woman said she was arguing with her boyfriend, and Begay Jr. got into his truck to leave.

The woman opened the passenger-side door to retrieve her belongings, but Begay grabbed the door from the inside and pulled it closed, pinning the woman’s finger in the door, according to the incident report.

Begay sped away down the alley dragging the woman a short distance before she freed her hand and fell to the ground, the report says.

She suffered scratches to her nose, chin and forehead, the report says. The tip of her middle finger on her left hand was fractured.

A witness said the woman chased the truck.

The woman told police Begay probably didn’t know her hand was stuck inside the door or that she was being dragged. The woman denied having a physically abusive relationship with Begay.

“She kept saying it was her fault that she was trying to get her stuff from the truck,” the incident report says. “She said he was too drunk to know that he had drug her.”

An arrest warrant for third-degree assault, involving domestic violence, was signed by Chief District Judge Gregory Lyman.
