Fair board accepting fair theme ideas
The La Plata County Fair Board is accepting theme ideas for the 2012 La Plata County Fair.
Themes should reflect the family and community nature of the fair, and the theme or slogan should be 10 words or less.
Artwork is encouraged and can be dropped off with submissions at the La Plata County Extension Office at the fairgrounds or mailed to La Plata County Fairgrounds, 2500 Main Ave., Durango, CO, 81301.
Submissions should be labeled with a name and telephone number. Entries must be received by 5 p.m. Feb. 23. The winner will receive a $100 cash prize.
Free health talk to address obesity
Mercy Regional Medical Center and the Women’s Health Coalition will present “Understanding the Relationship of ‘Carbohydrate’ Nutrition, Obesity, Diabetes and Heart Disease” from 5:30 to 7 p.m. today in Program Room 1 of the Durango Public Library, 1900 East Third Ave.
This will be a scientific and political overview of the obesity epidemic and the effects on health-care spending; how dietary carbohydrates fuel disease; and how redefining nutrition provides a solution.
Dr. Jeff Gerber, of South Suburban Family and Occupational Medicine, will present the program. Refreshments will be served.
Zoning principles topic of talk set for Thursday
Don Elliot, author of A Better Way to Zone, will give an informational talk about zoning principles to the La Plata County Board of County Commissioners from 12:30 to 3:45 p.m. Thursday in the commissioner’s meeting room at the La Plata County Courthouse, 1060 East Second Ave.

Beekeepers’ group to meet Thursday
The Four Corners Beekeepers Association, also known as The Buzz Club, will meet at 6 p.m. Thursday at the First Baptist Church, 560 County Road 521 in Bayfield.
The club will discuss ordering bees as a group, the winter hive check and the year’s meeting schedule.

Ski, climbing events set for Friday, Saturday
The Chapman Challenge, the uphill/downhill race, will be held Friday at Chapman Ski Hill.
Registration will begin at 6:30 p.m., and the race will begin at 7:30 p.m. The race will be held after the Snowdown Parade. All forms of snow travel are welcome, including skis, snowboards, snowshoes, etc.
The Rock Lounge Bouldering Competition will be held Saturday at the Rock Lounge, 1111 Camino del Rio. This is an indoor climbing competition for climbers of all ages. Registration will begin at 5 p.m, and the climb will be held from 5:30 to 8 p.m.
Parade will cause street closures
These road closures will occur because of the Snowdown Parade:
Crews, equipment, and police escorts will set up barricades in traffic lanes on Main Avenue between Fifth and 12th streets.
The 500 block of Main Avenue will be closed at 3 p.m. Friday to allow city crews to set barricades.
Main Avenue from College Drive to 12th Street will be restricted beginning at 4:30 p.m.
City crews will begin setting up pedestrian barricades at 4:30 p.m.
Main Avenue and cross Main Avenue traffic routes will be closed at 5 p.m. and will remain closed until the barricades have been removed.
No parking will be permitted on Fifth Street from East Third to East Sixth avenues for parade staging at 8 a.m.
Fifth Street will be closed from East Second Avenue to East Third Avenue at 4 p.m.
Fifth Street business access will be allowed through the alley between Main and East Second avenues off of College Drive.
All of the above streets will be posted no parking with specific times 24 hours in advance, vehicles illegally parked will be subject to tow at owner’s expense.
