Ignacio resident Lawerence R. Miller died Thursday, Feb. 2, 2012, at Mercy Regional Medical Center in Durango. He was 75.
Mr. Miller was born to Lawrence and Ilene Miller on Aug. 6, 1936, in Mariposa, Calif., and grew up there.
He married Peggy White in 1954 in Mariposa, and they raised three children together in Mariposa.
Mr. Miller worked in the woods most of his life as the owner and operator of Miller Logging. His wife died of cancer in 1980.
He had another daughter, Lauren, with his second wife, Joy Miller. The marriage later ended in divorce.
Later in life, he married longtime friend Winifred McAndews. They lived in Mariposa for a while and then moved to Colorado about 20 years ago.
Mr. Miller loved everything about the outdoors. He enjoyed fishing and hunting deer, elk and quail. For many years he cut and sold Christmas trees with the family. He would arrange hunting trips for family, friends or whoever wanted to go.
“He always raised a garden – enough for the whole town,” his family said.
Mr. Miller was preceded in death by his wife of 26 years, Peggy Miller; and daughter Deborah Mecchi.
He is survived by his wife of almost 20 years, Winifred Miller, of Ignacio; son, Robert Miller, of Bayfield; daughters Cathey Thornburg of North Fork, Calif., and Lauren Miller of Cheyenne, Wyo.; brother, Rusty Miller, of Priest River, Idaho; sister JeanAnn Lee of Merced, Calif., stepchildren Rita Shablo of Bayfield, Roxanne Chiu of El Paso, Texas, Randy McAndrews of Mariposa and Ronell Riessen of Thousand Oaks, Calif.; 19 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.
Cremation will occur. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 11, 2012, at Pine Valley Foursquare Church, 1328 County Road 501 in Bayfield. The Rev. Scott Kujath will officiate.
