Forest service seeks comment on fish project

The San Juan National Forest Columbine Ranger District is seeking public comment during the early phases of planning for a proposal to construct additional fish barriers on Hermosa Creek and the East Fork of Hermosa Creek. The structures would build on work under way since 2001 to maintain and increase Colorado River cutthroat trout populations.

The proposal is to create two barriers limiting upstream movement of non-native fish (brook, rainbow and brown trout) into the upper reaches of Hermosa Creek and the East Fork of Hermosa Creek. One structure would be located on Hermosa Creek immediately below the confluence with East Fork Hermosa Creek and the other on the East Fork approximately a quarter mile upstream from the Hermosa Trail trailhead.

Comments should be submitted no later than March 12 to Cam Hooley, Columbine Ranger District, P.O. Box 439, Bayfield, CO 81122, or via email to chooley@fs.fed.us.

For more information or details concerning the project, call Dave Gerhardt at 385-1266 or Clay Kampf at 385-1220.
