FLC volleyball digs All-Academic honors

Four Fort Lewis College volleyball players landed on the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Volleyball All-Academic Honor Roll for their work in the classroom this season.

Defensive specialists Heather Bryant and Heather Chivers, libero Jenna Kinzer and outside hitter Julie Oberriter were selected to the All-Academic team.

“I am very proud of the academic efforts made by our academic all-conference recipients,” FLC head coach Shelly Aaland – herself a two-time honoree during her playing career at Fort Lewis – said in a news release to The Durango Herald.

The first and second teams and honor roll were selected from a group of players that has spent two consecutive semesters or three consecutive quarters at their institution and have a grade-point average of 3.30 or higher and are a starter or reserve.

Bryant, a senior from Loveland, carries a 3.34 GPA in general biology and had 127 digs in her final season with the Skyhawks.

Chivers, a sophomore from Conifer, holds a 3.73 GPA in public health and was a recipient of the D2 Athletic Directors Association/WeatherPORT Academic Achievement Award in 2010. She had 19 digs this season.

Kinzer holds a 3.37 GPA in exercise science with a physiology option. The sophomore from Colorado Springs led FLC with 303 digs and had 21 service aces.

Oberriter, a sophomore from Dillon, has a 3.61 GPA in exercise science with an athletic training option and also works as an athletic trainer at Fort Lewis. She had 16 kills this season.

“They are exemplifying what we look for in our student athletes and giving a very good example to our younger players,” Aaland said.

Colorado Christian setter Lauren Rosenthal, who carries a 4.0 GPA in counseling, was the league’s Academic Player of the Year.
