The Fort Lewis College women’s basketball team rebounded in a big way Saturday.
First, the Skyhawks outrebounded Colorado Christian 47-33, 22 of them coming on the offensive glass.
Then the Skyhawks rebounded from a two-game losing streak to trounce the Cougars 79-59.
“We became a pretty good basketball team,” FLC head coach Mark Kellogg said. “It was much more vintage Fort Lewis women’s basketball (Saturday).”
For the Skyhawks, vintage play meant stout defense and plenty of hustle under the basket.
Kellogg said his team has gotten away from good defense in its two losses, but FLC brought it back Saturday with extra hustle and effort that also led to scores of rebounds.
“All our bigs were just so active in rebounding the heck out of the basketball,” Kellogg said.
Jenna Santistevan led on the glass with 11, one ahead of Mary Rose Paiz’s 10. Dana Schreibvogel added nine, and Jamie Simmons pulled down five.
Those rebounders added their share of offense too.
Santistevan tallied a double-double with 18 points, just behind Schreibvogel’s team-high 19. Simmons scored 15, and Ashley Kuchar had 11.
“Kuchar played maybe her best game of the year,” Kellogg said.
The Skyhawks (20-4, 17-3 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference) fell behind 16-7 early before they evened it up and took the lead for a 42-31 halftime advantage. They added more points to the margin after the intermission and didn’t let up.
