Stress fracture? What stress fracture?

If you didn’t know Fort Lewis College men’s basketball team captain Matt Morris had a stress fracture in his left foot, you wouldn’t believe it after Saturday night.

Morris scored a team-high 16 points, including a 3-pointer, pulled down a team-second six rebound against Colorado Christian, and even threw down a one-handed, tomahawk-style jam.

Oh what a difference the big man makes.

The day after falling to Colorado Mines by 20 points with Morris on the bench, the Skyhawks paid the beating forward, routing the Cougars by a final of 88-67.

But Morris wasn’t the only standout.

Ignacio High School graduate Alex Herrera tallied a double-double with career highs in scoring and rebounding: He scored 12 and pulled down 10.

FLC head coach Bob Hofman said Herrera has had a “really, really good” couple of weeks in practice and has adjusted well to the pace of the game.

“(The double-double) was tremendous for him,” Hofman said. “He’s just done a really nice job of competing in practice every day, and it’s paid off in the games.”

Andre Marquez and Matt Billups also added 12 each.

As a team, the Skyhawks shot an impressive 56 percent from the floor and 50 percent from beyond the arc for 11 made 3-pointers.

And they also dominated the Cougars on the boards, nabbing 38 total rebounds to 26 from Christian. Eleven of them came on the offensive glass.

Fort Lewis went on an 11-2 run to start off the game, and Christian never got much closer. Before half the Skyhawks had extended their lead to about 20 for the 43-24 halftime score.

In the second half, Fort Lewis pushed the lead to as much as 28 before settling on the final 21-point margin.
