Renovation in store for City Market

10-month remodel is scheduled for Town Plaza location

Construction workers are expected to organize a staging area outside City Market today for a 10-month remodel of the downtown supermarket at 6 Town Plaza.

Company officials plan to keep the store open as much as possible. If a closure is necessary, it would be temporary, perhaps for a week or two at most, said Kelli McGannon, a corporate spokeswoman.

The closure would be announced ahead of time to accommodate workers and customers, she said.

Workers might be asked to use their vacation time or could be reassigned to other duties, such as working at the City Market at 3130 Main Ave.

Officials asked for customers’ patience because some store reorganization will be necessary to accommodate the construction. Renovations are expected to begin with the floor and ceiling.

“We understand it’s never an easy thing to continue shopping (during construction),” McGannon said. “Certainly some things will shift around. Our goal is to make it as seamless possible.”

Once the “face-lift” is complete, she said customers will feel like they’re walking into a new store.

“It will look completely different,” McGannon said. “There will be new tiles, new fixtures.”

While the 50,000 square foot store won’t be expanded, the space will be reconfigured for new amenities such as a nutrition shop for vitamins and supplements and new stations for cheese and sushi. McGannon anticipates an expanded selection of natural and organic food as well.

City Market, which is owned by the Kroger Co., moved into the building in late 1986, occupying a former Montgomery Ward department store, said former store employees.

City Market moved from the building where Auto Zone, at Main Avenue and east 14th Street, is now located.

Because of a growing demand for groceries, city of Durango officials have said the area could easily support another supermarket.

A grocery store is expected to be one of the first stores for the planned big-box corridor along Wilson Gulch Road in Grandview.
