Before the last-minute cancellation of its slate of games at the Presidents Day Tournament at Chapman Hill Ice Rink last weekend, the joint Durango-Telluride Mountaineers’ youth hockey team climbed above .500 with a pair of victories in Telluride two weekends ago.
The Mountaineers (8-7-1) beat Grand Valley (Grand Junction) twice and lost to undefeated Crested Butte (16-0).
Grand Valley goaltender Jennifer Hicks kept her team close early in the first game of the weekend, but Mason Johnston scored a pair of goals – one in the first and one in the second – and the Mountaineers never trailed in a 6-0 win.
Trevor Croke scored twice, and Liam Millar and Nico Shapiro also scored for Durango-Telluride.
After a 1-1 tie early, Crested Butte defeated Durango-Telluride 7-1 in Saturday’s nightcap.
On Sunday, Gabe Tonnessen and Willy Hess scored early, and after Grand Valley responded with a goal in the second period, the Mountaineers scored seven consecutive second-period goals to lead 9-1 going into the third.
Max Laws had a hat trick; Danny Cummins had two goals; Hunter Richey, Austin McMenimen, Willy Frownfelter, Johnston and Croke also scored in the Mountaineers’ 12-1 victory.
