Ignacio boys start, finish fast

Bobcats in tournament championship

The Bobcats started fast and finished fast.

The Ignacio High School boys basketball team blitzed Mancos 65-40 on Friday night in the semifinals of the San Juan Basin League District Tournament in Cortez.

The Bobcats, ranked No. 4 in the state in Class 2A by coloradopreps.com, started with two consecutive 3-pointers by freshman Adison Jones.

“That was huge. He’s been sick and hasn’t been able to practice,” Ignacio head coach Chris Valdez said. “But he came out ready to play. He had 11 points in limited time, and he has six rebounds – all in the first half.”

Senior Shane Richmond led the Bobcats with 24 points.

“And he had four assists, which is ... unusual,” Valdez said after the Ignacio boys improved to 16-4.

“Really, the big story for us was Xavier Watts,” Valdez said.

The Ignacio head coach said early foul problems forced Watts into the point-guard role.

“He took over at the point, and in the first 10 minutes ... he had eight assists,” Valdez said. “He just took over ... it was really nice to see that.”

The Ignacio boys will play Ridgway, the No. 2 seed, at 2:30 p.m. today at Montezuma-Cortez High School in the boys championship game.

Ridgway beat Telluride 54-50 in Friday’s semifinal.
