Durangoan found dead on Hogsback

A 22-year-old man from Durango was discovered dead Friday night by La Plata County Search and Rescue workers.

The man, whose name has not yet been released, was found at 11:36 p.m. at a campsite about a quarter mile up Hogsback Mountain, near County Road 206, said Sgt. Brandon Tisher with the La Plata County Sheriff’s Office.

There does not appear to be any suspicious circumstances surrounding the case, which is currently under investigation, Tisher said. There was no noticeable sign of injury, and the cause of death remains unknown pending an autopsy, he said.

Search and rescue crews began looking for the man after his friends placed a 911 call Friday night, said Butch Knowlton, director of the La Plata County Office of Emergency Management.

The man, who was found in a tent with some provisions, had notified his friends that he was leaving earlier in the week to go camping for a few days, Knowlton said.

When the man’s friends found his dog, which was supposed to be with him, they became alarmed and placed the call, he said.
