The season will continue for the Ignacio High School girls basketball team.
The Bobcats rebounded Saturday with a 57-34 victory over Telluride in the third-place game at the San Juan Basin League District Tournament in Cortez.
“We put it together and got the win over Telluride,” Ignacio head coach Brice Searles said after the Bobcats (10-10) qualified for the Class 2A regionals for the third consecutive year.
As the No. 3 team from the San Juan League, Ignacio will play in Grand Junction next weekend against an undetermined opponent.
“We had a good performance even though we were in foul trouble – serious foul trouble – early,” Searles said.
Michelle Simmons and Pam Cotton had matching double-doubles for the Bobcats. They each scored 16 points and 10 rebounds.
“They had ... outstanding games,” Searles said.
Simmons also had six steals and five assists.
Mariah Vigil scored 11 points to give IHS three players in double figures. Teammate Val Armstrong had five rebounds.
“She was big for us in the second half,” said Searles, who also praised the play of Cloe Seibel, Sky Cotton and Jordan Cuthair.
“Our defense did an outstanding job,” Searles said, pointing to a key stretch in the third quarter when IHS extended its lead.
Searles said the Bobcats went with a simplified game plan Saturday.
“I told the girls to just go out there and play defense ... play defense and run. And that’s the way we played,” Searles said.
“I’m so proud of these girls ... we get to play – at least – another week.”
