IHS boys crowned in Cortez

Herald Staff Report

For the fourth consecutive year, the Ignacio High School boys basketball team will host regionals as the No. 1 seed at Durango High School.

Ignacio, currently ranked fourth in the state by coloradopreps.com, hopes to make it four in a row in the elite eight at Massari Arena in Pueblo, too.

Ignacio (17-4) beat Ridgway (14-7) 53-41 in the San Juan Basin League District Tournament championship Saturday at Montezuma-Cortez High School.

IHS will host Crowley County next weekend in Durango, while West Grand will play Sanford in the other Region 3 boys basketball game. Times and dates have yet to be announced.

Ridgway will head to Alamosa for a Region 1 game against Rocky Ford at Adams State College.

Ignacio, behind 12th year head coach Chris Valdez, finished fourth last year at the CHSAA Class 2A Boys Basketball State Championships in Pueblo.

Ignacio finished Class 2A Colorado runner-up two years ago, and the perennial-powerhouse Bobcats finished fourth at the 2A state tournament three years ago in Pueblo.
