Team Mickel – Trudy, Benji and Charlie – captured four gold medals, and Sadie Smith and Coleman Bader also won gold to lead the Purgatory Freestyle Devo Ski Team last weekend at the U.S. Ski Association Rocky Mountain Freestyle Devo State Championships at Arapahoe Basin.

The Purgatory team competed in a field of more than 100 skiers ages 7 to 14 representing teams from Winter Park, Aspen, Telluride, Vail, Steamboat Springs and Summit County in addition to Purgatory.

The Mickel siblings each won gold in their age groups in moguls. Trudy, competing in the girls Junior 5 division for 9-10-year-olds added another gold in slopestyle. Charlie finished sixth in slopestyle among J6 (7-8) boys. Benji competed in the J3 (13-14) division.

Smith won the slopestyle in the girls J3 division. She also placed fourth in moguls. Teammate Dana Stahl was second in slopestyle and ninth in moguls.

Bader won the J3 boys slopestyle and took the Silver medal in moguls. Jimmy Pope skied to second- and seventh-place finishes.

Carter McQuinn paced Purgatory’s J4 boys (10-11-year-olds), finishing sixth in moguls and 10th in slopestyle. Rookie Tanner Murphy was seventh in slopestyle. Max Wilson was 10th in moguls and 11th in slopestyle, and rookie Emmet Stottlemyer was 13th in slopestyle and 21st in moguls.

Rookie Freddy Rawles posted a personal best in J5 boys slopestyle, and his twin brother, Hunter, had a personal best in moguls. Hunter also finished sixth in slopestyle.

“Any top-10 finish or personal best at this level is quite an accomplishment, let alone winning your age group,” Purgatory coach Kirk Rawles said. “We certainly are very proud of all our young athletes and congratulate the Micels on an amazing accomplishment.”
