New Mexico artist Louisa McElwain’s “Quiet Sentinel” won Best of Show in the Durango Arts Center Four Corners Commission.

Northern New Mexico artist Louisa McElwain didn’t make it to last week’s opening of the Durango Arts Center’s Four Corners Commission juried exhibit, but she made the trip north earlier this week to pick up her Best of Show award for her oil on canvas “Quiet Sentinel.”

Santa Fe artist and gallery director Verne Stanford juried the exhibit, which opened March 2. The award winners:

Best of Show – Louisa McElwain, “Quiet Sentinel,” oil on canvas

2nd place – Ryan Cary, “Ancient,” digital metal print

3rd place – Nick Blaisdell, “Ranch” ceramic

The “Reflections of Durango Award” chosen by the Durango Chamber of Commerce for use on its members’ poster for 2013 was presented to Rebecca Koeppen for “High Country Reds,” a pastel.

Stanford began with 147 submissions from 70 artists, and he selected 73 pieces representing 53 artists for the exhibit, which will continue through March 31.
