Pitching, defense shut down the Wolverines

Bayfield falls in Scorpion Invitational JV title game

The Bayfield Wolverines ran into good pitching and good defense Saturday.

The Wolverines, in the championship game of the JV division of the Scorpion Invitational in Farmington, lost 10-0 to the Piedra Vista JV team in six innings.

“We were kind of out of pitching, and they weren’t,” Bayfield head coach Tom Horton said after the Wolverines were limited to a single hit – from freshman Matt Knickerbocker.

“We were putting the ball in play. We didn’t strike out that much. But they didn’t make any errors. They made the plays,” Horton said.

He said Bayfield was victimized by errors early.

Piedra Vista scored seven runs in the first inning. But only three of the runs were earned, Horton said.

“A couple of critical errors killed us early,” Horton said. “But we got to see a lot this weekend.”

The Wolverines (2-1) will return to Farmington next weekend to participate in the Piedra Vista Invitational.
