The Ignacio High School track and field teams piled up the points Friday at the annual Montezuma-Cortez Invitational.
The Ignacio boys finished fourth (unofficially) as a team behind a pair of first-place finishes from sophomore Adam Herrera, who won the 400-meter dash and the long jump. Official times and distances were not available Friday night.
The Ignacio girls, behind a pair of first-place finishes from junior Michelle Simmons, took fifth out of 11 teams. Simmons won the 200 and the high jump with a personal-best jump of 5-2.
“I was really excited. We had a good showing (Friday),” Ignacio track coach Kathy Herrera said. “It was a good showing for the Bobcats.”
For the boys, Shane Richmond also collected a first place for the Bobcats. He won the discus and finished fourth in the shot put.
Dusty Mangus of Ignacio was second in the 100 and third in the 200.
Teagan Overturf, Herrera, Mangus and Austin Haire finished second in the 4x400 relay.
The Bayfield Wolverines also collected a number of top finishes Friday in Cortez.
The Wolverines were led by Michael Hawkins, who won the shot put at 45-7.75. Teammate TJ Pazell was second at 44-2.5. Pazell also finshed third in the triple jump and third in the long jump.
Michael Voss of BHS finished second in the high jump.
The BHS boys also collected three second-place relay finishes in the 4x100, 4x200 and 4x800.
Luke Webb added a third in the 1,600.
For the Bayfield girls, Katy Funkhouser led the way by winning the girls 1,600.
Jessica Cusick of BHS was second in the 400. Teammate Lacey Peinado was third.
Haley Goddard added a third in the discus.
The BHS girls 4x200 relay team finished second, and the 800 sprint medley relay team was second.
