Mary Phyllis Dyer Hollingsworth

Mary Phyllis Dyer Hollingsworth, mother of Durango resident Jim Hollingsworth, died Tuesday, March 20, 2012, at her home in Grand Junction. She was 88.

Mrs. Hollingsworth was born Oct. 1, 1923, in Weiser, Idaho, the youngest of two children of Joseph and Martha Dyer.

Mrs. Hollingsworth attended school in Ontario, Ore., and The University of Oregon in Eugene, Ore., where she was an active member of the Delta Gamma Sorority.

One of Mrs. Hollingsworth’s “proudest accomplishments,” was receiving her pilot’s license in 1943.

During World War II, Mrs. Hollingsworth met Dale Hollingsworth, a naval aviator.

On July 8, 1946, they married in Ontario. Together they had six children.

In 1957, Mrs. Hollingsworth and her family moved to Grand Junction where she raised her children.

During her life, Mrs. Hollingsworth was active in many organizations including a Friday night book club; Effective Parents Project – a nonprofit organization that empowered parents raising children; a social group known as “Destination Unknown,” that got together to travel; and numerous bridge groups.

Mrs. Hollingsworth was also a member of the St. Joseph’s Catholic Church.

She enjoyed sports, especially golf, and she spent time reading and traveling, her family said.

Mrs. Hollingsworth is preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, Dale Hollingsworth.

She is survived by her children Joan Hollingsworth of Glenwood Springs, Mary Verdieck, Anne Connolly and Janet Hollingsworth, all of Grand Junction, Jim Hollingsworth of Durango, and John Hollingsworth of Salt Lake City; six grandchildren, two great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

A funeral Mass will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, April 2, 2012, at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Grand Junction.
