Durango baker’s dozen does state for wrestling club

Girls are finished; boys wrestle next

The girls already have wrestled at state, while the boys will take their turn next weekend in Denver.

Durango Wrestling Club sent five wrestlers to the Colorado Girls Middle School State Wrestling Championships in Pueblo on March 11, and Kiah Garand and Areana Albo both earned top-three results.

Garand finished second in the 105-pound weight class, while Albo finished third at 105.

Ariel Albo (105), Teagan Garand (85) and Samantha Vasquez (70, elementary) also wrestled at state for the club.

Eight boys earned spots at the state championships this weekend in Denver: Aiden Aggeler (75), Cordell Ashcraft (75), Ricki Gallegos (100), Tyrell Thorsheim (105), Henry Dorr (120), David Etz (135) Manasseh Brackus (152) and James Zink (152). Cordell and Brackus are the first sixth graders from the DWC to qualify for state.

The Durango Wrestling Club, coached by Leo Garand, will host its annual middle school tournament at 9 a.m. Saturday at Durango High School.

“Please feel free to come on down and show some support for your local club,” Garand said in an email to The Durango Herald.
