Durango resident Kevin Robert Bruce died from injuries suffered after he fell off a scooter and was run over by another vehicle Saturday, March 31, 2012, in Durango. He was 65.
Mr. Bruce was born to Norman and Ellen Bruce on Feb. 5, 1947, in Long Island, N.Y. He grew up in New York for several years before his family moved to Mexico City for five years. The Bruce family returned to New York for a short time before moving to the Miami/Kendle area in Florida.
He served in the Army and was honorably discharged in 1976.
When he was young, Mr. Bruce helped with the family tomato farm for 20 years. He was a restaurateur in Florida before he moved to Durango in 1991. Mr. Bruce owned and operated Professional Computer Solutions in Durango.
He was a member of the High Noon and Durango Daybreak Rotary clubs. Mr. Bruce served on the board of Bank of the San Juans in Durango for a short time, as well as the Animas Mosquito Control District Board. His family said he donated his time and finances to serve those in need in the Durango area.
“Kevin’s passion was racing vintage race cars,” his family said. “One of his many treasured collectibles was a classic Mustang Shelby. His favorite track was Sebring Raceway in Florida, but he had raced at such notable tracks as the Denver Grand Prix and the Miami Grand Prix.”
Mr. Bruce also loved to work on cars, and he had just finished restoring an Austin Healy 3000 from the frame up after doing all of the restoration himself. He was a member of the “Car Guys Club” that met every month at the Kennebec Café in Hesperus.
Mr. Bruce enjoyed visiting Lake Powell and loved to travel, especially in Italy. He also enjoyed spending time with family while traveling in his motor home, cooking and spending time with his golden retriever, Bella Donna.
On Oct. 8, 2005, he married Ann Vinton at Rotary Park in Durango.
Mr. Bruce is survived by his wife, Ann Bruce, of Durango; children Travis Bruce of Boulder, Kevin Bruce Jr. of Miami, Scott Bruce of Homestead, Fla., and Robbie Bruce of Tampa, Fla.; stepchildren Joshua Ellis and Jace Ellis, both of Grand Island, Neb., and Ian Ellis and Ashton Ellis, both of Alliance, Neb.; siblings Norman Bruce and Ellen Bruce, both of Fayetteville, Ark., and Doug Bruce of Asheville, N.C.; former wives Marty Bruce of Durango and Vivian Nelson of Homestead; and five grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, April 6, 2012, at First United Methodist Church, 2917 Aspen Drive in Durango
