The Bayfield High School track team ran, jumped and threw against a “really high level of competition” at the Palisade Frank Woodburn Invitational on Saturday in Grand Junction, grabbing a first place and a handful of top-three finishes, BHS coach Jenni Guy said.
“We had a lot of kids shave off time and improve their distances,” Guy said. “It was an incredible day of competition.”
Team results were not yet available, Guy said.
For the boys:
Michael Hawkins took fifth in the shot put with a throw of 44 feet, 2 inches.
TJ Pazell took fifth in the long jump with a jump of 19-7.
Cody Rose took seventh in the high jump with a jump of 5-6, and Hugh Tracy took eighth with the same jump.
Joey Webb finished eighth in the 400-meter dash with a time of 54.9 seconds.
The 4-by-200 team of Keith Wickman, Webb, Kenai Duran and Zach Stone took sixth with a time of 1 minute, 40.8 seconds.
The 4-by-400 team of Robert Westbrook, Webb, Nate Tate and Nate Goddard took seventh in 3:39.3.
For the girls:
Candace Shaw finished first in the discus with a throw of 107-11, and Haley Goddard took third at 102-11.
Shaw also took 4th in the shot put with a throw of 32-3.
Samantha Espinosa took fifth in the shot put with a throw of 31-10.
Destini McGhehey finished second in the high jump with a jump of 5 feet.
Jessie Roukema took eighth in the high jump with a jump of 4-6.
Jessica Cusick took third in the 800-meter run in 2:31.6.
Micaela Knickerbocker took seventh in the 100 hurdles in 18.6.
Maggie Zink took eighth in the 400 meters in 67.1.
The 4X400 team of Brittany Hunter, Zink, Lacey Peinado and Cusick finished fourth in 4:29.1.
The sprint medley team of Morgan Allred, McGhehey, Roukema and Haley Clarke finished sixth in 2:09.8.
The 4-by-200 team of Trista Hooley, Knickerbocker, Roukema and Ashlyn Schulder finished eighth in 1:57.7.
Bayfield will host its annual Pine River Invitational next Saturday at Wolverine Country Stadium at BHS.
