Durango man dead after SUV rollover

Alcohol suspected to be a contributor

A 30-year-old man from Durango died Sunday morning after becoming trapped beneath his vehicle at the bottom of an embankment.

The man, whose name was not released Sunday, was driving a 2000 Ford Explorer northbound on Colorado Highway 172, southwest of Durango near milepost 12, when his vehicle ran off the right side of the road, said Mike Baker, a spokesman for the Colorado State Patrol in Denver.

The driver overcorrected, bringing his vehicle back onto the road and off the left side of the road, over an embankment, Baker said.

The vehicle rolled at least twice, and the driver, who was not wearing a seat belt, was ejected from the vehicle, Baker said.

The SUV came to a rest on top of the driver at the bottom of the embankment, and the driver died at the scene, Baker said.

The accident occured at 6:59 a.m.

Alcohol is suspected in the crash, though the case is currently under investigation, and an autopsy has not yet been completed, Baker said.
