Police are unsure exactly what time a Durango man rolled his vehicle and became fatally trapped underneath.
The crash was reported at 6:59 a.m. Sunday along Colorado Highway 172, about a mile north of Ignacio. But authorities say the accident could have happened anytime between 1 and 7 a.m. Sunday.
The driver, whose name was not released Monday pending notification of family members, is a 30-year-old man of Mexican nationality, said Capt. Martin Petrik, with the Colorado State Patrol.
Alcohol was definitely involved, he said.
The man was driving a gray 2000 Ford Explorer northbound when he went off the right side of the road, over-corrected and came back onto the road, Petrik said.
The driver spun counter-clockwise, went off the left side of the road and rolled twice down an embankment, Petrik said.
The driver, who was not wearing a seat belt, was ejected and became pinned under the vehicle.
There was a strong odor of alcohol at the scene, Petrik said.
It was taking longer than usual to notify next of kin because the man was from Mexico, he said.
