BHS: 6-0 W and a 7-0 start

The Wolverines are rolling right now.

The Bayfield High School girls soccer team steamrolled to a 6-0 win at Salida on Friday afternoon, improving to a perfect 7-0 on the season.

“We really controlled the game,” Bayfield head coach Jen Zelinski said. “The girls’ talking was great; their passing was great.”

She said the Wolverines played their most complete game of the season.

“By far, it was their best game. They are playing really smart,” said Zelinski, the former Fort Lewis College soccer standout who took over the BHS program five years ago.

Bayfield scored in the sixth minute when Jaida Ross set up Swedish foreign exchange student Sanna Penton for a goal.

BHS went up 2-0 when Keenan Moreta scored the first of her three goals in the 36th minute.

Haley Fleming assisted on Moreta’s first goal.

Effie Nistler set up Lindsey Reinmuth for Bayfield’s third goal.

Moreta then scored back-to-back goals, assisted by Penton and Breetta Moe.

The final goal was an own-goal set up by a Bayfield corner kick.

Jaylee Ross had three saves in goal to earn the Wolverines’ victory.

Zelinski said the Wolverines moved players into different positions in the second half, “and we still had great runs ... outstanding play,” Zelinski said.

“I’m so happy. The girls are playing well, and they look like they are having fun.”

Seven consecutive wins will do that.

The Wolverines will go for eight in a row at 9:30 a.m. today in Center. The match was moved up to 9:30 from 11 a.m. in an effort to beat the incoming bad weather.

On Tuesday, the BHS soccer team will host Ignacio at 4 p.m. at Wolverine Country Stadium in Bayfield.
