Weather slammed into Saturday’s high school sports schedule like a blizzard from Flagstaff.
With an eye on the weather and the weather forecast, Bayfield High School officials postponed two events – baseball and track and field – scheduled for today.
The annual Pine River Invitational track and field meet, a large regional event at Wolverine Country Stadium, was postponed and rescheduled for Wednesday.
“We’ve dealt with this before,” Bayfield track coach Sherri Kimball said.
Last year, a heavy snowstorm with accompanying winds forced the track meet from its usual Saturday perch to a midweek event.
Track and field events will begin at 11 a.m. Wednesday in Bayfield with an accelerated meet schedule. All events will be finals; there will be no preliminaries.
Sixteen schools, all from Colorado, are scheduled to participate.
But with the meet rescheduled for Wednesday, additional area schools and New Mexico schools may join the field just as they did last year.
Kimball said the weather forecast that called for heavy sustained winds today was a deciding factor in rescheduling the meet.
Not only would high winds adversely affect performances, she said the times (and distances) would not be official state-qualifying marks because of wind above allowable levels.
The weather forecast also wiped out Bayfield’s baseball games.
The Wolverines were scheduled to play Monte Vista in an Intermountain League doubleheader today, but those games have been rescheduled for 2 and 4 p.m. Tuesday at Bayfield Middle School.
