Wolverines find their focus in Center

Herald Staff Report

With bad weather bearing down on the soccer field in Center on Saturday morning, the Wolverines didn’t waste any time.

The undefeated Bayfield High School girls soccer team scored in the second minute, five more times in the first 15 minutes and swept to a 10-0 victory.

“The weather was coming in,” Bayfield head coach Jen Zelinski said after the Wolverines won their eighth consecutive match of the season, so “we stepped it up.”

“The warmup wasn’t great,” Zelinski said.

But the heavily favored Wolverines focused their attention by game time, she said.

“They pulled it together,” Zelinski said.

Bayfield led 8-0 at halftime.

Senior striker Keenan Moreta had a hat trick for the second consecutive match.

Senior teammate Sanna Penton, a foreign-exchange student from Sweden, also had a hat trick against the Vikings on Saturday.

Grave Harvey, a sophomore, scored twice.

Single goals were netted by sophomore Effie Nistler and freshman Meaghan Mooney.

Jaylie Ross had the shutout in goal for Bayfield (8-0-0).

“Crisp passing ... good finishing. We played well,” Zelinski said.

The Wolverines will host their Pine River rival, the Ignacio Bobcats, in a nonconference match at 4 p.m. Tuesday at Wolverine Country Stadium.
