Margaret L. Decker died Friday, April 6, 2012, at her home in Hesperus. She was 89.
Mrs. Decker was born July 18, 1922, in Model to Robert Sweeney and Leona Devisher Sweeney. She was the third child of four, including a brother and two sisters.
The family moved to the Durango area when she was 10 years old. She graduated from Durango High School in 1940. In high school, Mrs. Decker lettered in baseball, basketball and swimming.
“When she got up to bat, you had to watch out,” said her daughter, Billie Decker.
In October 1941, Mrs. Decker married Bill Decker in Durango. Mr. Decker was the light of her life, her family said.
The couple began their lives as ranchers at Vallecito. They later made their permanent home 18 miles south of Hesperus, where they raised sheep and crops.
“Maggie was always busy raising two children, cooking for crews, being a farmer and irrigator and helping at sheep camp,” her family said. “She lived 67 years at the ranch and wouldn’t live anywhere else.”
Mrs. Decker will be remembered for her popcorn balls and her great love of dancing, her family said.
“She was a free spirit with a generous heart, quick wit and keen sense of humor,” her daughter said.
Mrs. Decker was preceded in death by her husband, Bill Decker, in 1980.
She is survived by her son, William K. Decker, of La Plata, N.M.; daughter, Billie Louise Decker, of Durango; sister Sylvia Nelson of Lakewood; and three grandchildren, two great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
A celebration of life will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, May 5, 2012, at Redmesa Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
Memorial donations may be made to St. Jude Children’s Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
