Combs? Smith? Who’s your pick for DHS?

Durango girls basketball coaching finalists will meet the public today

The search for Durango High School’s next girls basketball coach has been narrowed to two, and the public will have a chance to meet and interview them today.

Nancy Smith and Adam Combs were the two finalists who accepted the invitation for an interview, with an unknown third candidate withdrawing from consideration.

There will be an open forum for parents, players and interested community members at 5:30 p.m. today in the school auditorium, where each candidate will take audience questions for 25 minutes apiece. Afterward, those in attendance will have the chance to give written comments about each candidate to the interview team for consideration.

The new coach is expected to be announced by May 4.

Smith took over the Demons in January on an interim basis after the resignation of then-head coach Klint Chandler. Durango went 3-11 under Smith, including a sweep of archrival Montezuma-Cortez.

Smith played collegiately at Wake Forest and has a combined seven years of experience coaching high school, developmental leagues and running camps in North Carolina.

Adam Combs currently is an assistant boys basketball coach at Florence High School, and he teaches at Fremont Middle School in Florence. The CSU-Pueblo graduate has six years combined experience coaching boys and girls basketball.
