Former Durango resident Billie Jean Murtagh died Saturday, April 21, 2012, in Memphis, Tenn. She was 80.
Mrs. Murtagh was born to William F. and Pauline Johnson on June 4, 1931, in Memphis.
On Jan. 10, 1953, she married Kenneth P. Murtagh in Washington.
The Murtaghs lived in Malone, N.Y., for many years.
Mrs. Murtagh was the assistant deputy county clerk in Franklin County, N.Y., for about 15 years before retiring in 1992.
“She lived a full life of laughter and beauty,” her family said.
Mrs. Murtagh was active in many community organizations, including Eastern Star and Business and Professional Women International in Malone and was a devoted member of the Congregational Church.
Mrs. Murtagh lived in Durango from 1994 to 2005. She was an active member of First Presbyterian Church of Durango.
In 2005, she moved back to her childhood city of Memphis and was an active member in Germantown Presbyterian Church as long as her health allowed.
Mrs. Murtagh was preceded in death by her husband of 46 years, Kenneth P. Murtagh; and daughter Kelly Murtagh.
She is survived by her daughter, Alice Murtagh Thompson, of Germantown, Tenn.; son, Richard Murtagh, of Cupertino, Calif.; sister Dorothy Perry of Memphis; two grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
A memorial service was held Wednesday, April 25, 2012, at Memorial Park Funeral Home and Cemetery in Memphis.
